Grand Union Orchestra – Summer School, August 2018

Monday 30th July – Thursday 2nd August 2018

The fifth Grand Union annual residential Summer School will take place in the wonderfully spacious Writtle University College and its idyllic surroundings, near Chelmsford in Essex. It will run for four days, beginning lunchtime Monday, July 30^th, and concluding on Thursday afternoon August 2^nd with a concert of the work created during the course.

The course will be led by musicians from the Grand Union Orchestra, many of them also featured in that article. They represent all the world’s major musical traditions, into which they were born and bred; internationally-fêted performers in their own right, they are also great communicators and charismatic workshop leaders.

The course is open to young musicians aged 12 to 21 who wish to learn more about world music techniques first-hand from experts and develop their creative and improvisational skills. Players of non-European instruments are especially welcome, and we also encourage multi-instrumentalists.

Hackney Choral Courses – July, 2018

Make new friends from different schools, have fun, and gain new skills. The Hackney Choral Courses are for children aged 8-15 and are led by professional musicians and teachers who have worked with choirs all over the world. Learn amazing music to sing in a concert at the end of the course. No prior experience needed. Places cost £3 per day per child/£5 per family. Full bursaries available. Food included, and music copies can be taken home.

Hackney Youth Orchestras Trust – Summer School

Hackney Youth Orchestras Trust – Music Summer School, Monday 23rd – Friday 27th July 2017

Hackney Youth Orchestras Trust (HYOT) has been providing music tuition for 6-21 year olds at our Saturday Music School in Hackney since 1990.

For the 4 th year, we will be holding a Music Summer School at Berger Primary School (Anderson Road, LondonE9 6HB) from Monday 23rd to Friday 27th July 2018. The Summer School has 50 places for students from Hackney and nearby schools. Students need to be a minimum of 8 years old.

There will be a range of group music activities, allowing students to learn new music skill and develop their existing ones as well as have lots of fun. These activities will include orchestra, group sessions, choir, music appreciation classes as well as playground activities with our youth worker. Each day there will be a supervised lunch break for students. Students will need to bring a packed lunch.

Girls Rock London – Music Camp, August 2018

Girls Rock London: Monday, July 3oth – Saturday, August 4th, BSix College, Clapton

Girls Rock London is a six day music project where girls aged 11-16 will develop the tools to write their own song and perform it in a concert to family and friends.

It runs from 10am – 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, with a showcase concert on the Saturday. All participants will have the chance to work on and perform vocals, as well as learning the basics in guitar, bass, drums, electronics or keyboard. Everyone will then be allocated an instrument to focus on for the week, and form a band with other girls in the camp. The camp will also include a range of workshops on topics aimed at raising girls’ confidence and self-esteem.

There are 25 places on the camp. All tutors on the camp are music industry professionals with extensive experience of working with children in diverse settings. We take safeguarding and child protection seriously and work hard to ensure that young people at our camps have a safe, supportive and fun week

Wonderful Woodwind

In this concert, we will meet renowned players Uchenna Ngwe on oboe and Rowland Sutherland on flute. If you were thinking of your child taking up a woodwind instrument you definitely need to know about the oboe and flute. With music from Peter and the Wolf, to Debussy (whose 100th anniversary we celebrate this year), to Jazz and music by lesser known composers such as Madeleine Dring, this will be a fantastically educational introduction to these instruments with the usual chances for children to respond with singing, dancing, drawing and asking questions.

“Flautist Rowland Sutherland has a superb sound and technique, and is undoubtedly one of the very best flautists on the British scene.” TIME OUT. 

Rowland regular plays music from classical to Jazz to World, Folk and pop and his concerts have taken him to venues such as Carnegie Hall, North Sea jazz festival and Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall. He has worked with artists such as Courtney Pine, King Sunny Ade and MC Solaar. He is a professor at Trinity College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Uchenna Ngwe is a London-based oboist. Raised in Tottenham in North London, her oboe performances have taken her across Europe as well as Africa and Asia. You can see her playing and talking about her career here. She also runs the company Cracked Reed helping musicians to link music, technology and education.
