Why everyone should learn the piano? June 14, 2018 by Claire Sivier Every house used to have a piano. Every pub used to have a piano. Piano was used to entertain: for solos, for piano duets, to accompany other instruments and most often to bash out the chords whilst everyone sang along. People had piano lessons but people also taught themselves. In this concert, Yshani Perinpanayagam and Kids’ Concert Company founder Holly Cullen-Davies with their broad range of expertise will celebrate the piano and all of its uses ranging from serious classical repertoire to improvising on the spot based on songs of your choice. If your child is having piano lessons but you sometimes wonder where it is all leading this is the place to find out more. Yshani is pianist of the Del Mar Piano Trio and company pianist of Rambert Dance Company where she is currently Music Director for Ben Duke’s Goat. She was Music Director for circus troupe Circa at the Barbican and Assistant Music Director for the Royal Opera House west end transfer of Wind in the Willows, featuring CHROMA ensemble. She also performs with Olivier award winning show Showstopper! The Improvised Musical. Yshani was winner of the 10th Yamaha Birmingham Accompanist of the Year Award. Holly Cullen-Davies started doing concerts for children with the Wigmore Hall Chamber Tots series. She went on to run children’s concerts at The Little Missenden festival and Hebden Bridge piano Festival. She founded the Kids’ Concert Company in 2017. You can see her talking about it here. Wonderful Woodwind June 14, 2018 by Claire Sivier In this concert, we will meet renowned players Uchenna Ngwe on oboe and Rowland Sutherland on flute. If you were thinking of your child taking up a woodwind instrument you definitely need to know about the oboe and flute. With music from Peter and the Wolf, to Debussy (whose 100th anniversary we celebrate this year), to Jazz and music by lesser known composers such as Madeleine Dring, this will be a fantastically educational introduction to these instruments with the usual chances for children to respond with singing, dancing, drawing and asking questions. “Flautist Rowland Sutherland has a superb sound and technique, and is undoubtedly one of the very best flautists on the British scene.” TIME OUT. Rowland regular plays music from classical to Jazz to World, Folk and pop and his concerts have taken him to venues such as Carnegie Hall, North Sea jazz festival and Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall. He has worked with artists such as Courtney Pine, King Sunny Ade and MC Solaar. He is a professor at Trinity College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Uchenna Ngwe is a London-based oboist. Raised in Tottenham in North London, her oboe performances have taken her across Europe as well as Africa and Asia. You can see her playing and talking about her career here. She also runs the company Cracked Reed helping musicians to link music, technology and education.
